Chalkboard Chest Freezer

Ever since my husband and I moved out and first had our own place, we've always had at least one appliance that didn't match everything else. Our first house had all white appliances and we had black/stainless steel toaster oven sitting on the counter. Our next place had all black appliances, so our toaster oven finally looked as though it belonged, but our bright white coffee pot, did not. That coffee pot broke, I bought a black one and for a few glorious months, all of our appliances matched. (Have you figured out yet that I have just a touch of OCD?)

Our next place, had all white appliances, again. Now my new black coffee pot was a misfit. (We got rid of the toaster oven at this point.) Finally, our current home, and hopefully the one we'll be in for at least a few years, has stainless steel/black appliances. That is, until my husband bought this chest freezer.

That white trashcan is a reject too, but I used to keep it in our laundry room, there's no room for that in this house. The chest freezer comes in handy and I can't deny that we need it(My husband hunts, there's lots of Bambi's mom and dad in there), but this area was just, ugly. It ruined the whole dark wood, stainless steel thing that our kitchen had going on. My husband made the mistake of saying that I could do whatever I want with it, and then he left for two weeks for work. The rest is pretty self explanatory.
I sanded it just a little(make sure you wear a mask) and then wiped it off and used painter's tape to cover the, uh, important looking knobs and things.

I did two coats, letting it dry in between, and I still have half of this can left.

I painted the white trash can, too. I left the foot-pedal white since the paint would probably rub off in no time.
I also finally got around to making these footprint butterflies with my kids.

I'll admit, it was pretty scary when I rolled that first line of black paint on that white surface. There was no going back at that point and I had to make it work. I'm pretty happy with the way that it turned out! I think that it looks much nicer without a stark white chest freezer in the middle of everything.

UPDATE: We still love it! Our chalkboard chest freezer wishes you a happy 4th of July! God Bless America!
